Learner's Permit. Again?

I finally got off my lazy bum and arranged for an appointment for my driving learner's permit test. It's next Tuesday (6 May).

We aren't allowed to transfer Malaysian drivers' licenses to the Australian one. I personally think this is a sucky rule, not to mention a very biased one, when Singaporean ones are allowed to be transferred over, hence exempting them from doing the whole learning test and probationary period thing. Oh, and the US drivers' licenses can be transferred over without any problems too. What gives? Those fellas drive on the other side of the road!

So right now, I'll have to study for the "undang" test before I do the actual driving test. In retrospect, it's been exactly 10 years since I did the whole driving test thing. It was in Malay, and I had to sit through six bloody hours of video and some fella droning on about traffic safety. Thank God I don't have to do that here. Phew.

Effective 1 July 2008, all probationary licenses are extended to an extra year, which means I'll be stuck with a P license (with the P sticker on the car) for THREE years! No use trying to book an appointment with VicRoads before then. Everything is fully booked; everyone wants to get theirs done before the changeover. Gah.

Well, back to my "undang" book.

Hook Turn

Weirdest rule? Hook turns. I still don't get it :(

Hahaha.. you need to do those turns in the city centre i.e., where you have those tram intersections. You'll get use to it. ;)

Anyway, 'P" stands for Pretty.
So drool on guys!!! Pretty Tine is behind the wheels! :)

i think there's a way around it. first convert to international and then to the local license haha =P

you could like buy little alphabet stickers and put them next to your P to spell a word. like P-e-a-n-u-t. hehe

qiqiqiqiqi... so confusing ya?! My friend used to say that I always take the left turn everytime I see intersections and got lost! hahaha.. now with that kind of sign, how can I arrive safely to my destination? hahaha...

Here in bandung we have BEKIBOLANG... belok kiri boleh langsung.. hehehehe...

I guess that just shows how 'highly' rated Malaysian driving standards are on the international stage! Gah!!

If you were a Malaysian tourist, you would be able to use your driving license. I was allowed to drive last time I was there.

Or, you could get a Malaysian International driving license and convert. But nvm la... just take the exam from there since you'll be living there now.

I encountered one of these hook turns before when I was driving in Melbourne. Totally lost and don't know what to do. So I stopped and waited until my Aussie host said "Go Now" and I did.

I guess it's something like "wait at the side of the road until no cars are coming in either direction, then turn."

I'm sure you'll ace the test since you already know how it works. Hehe!

If you have a full malaysian license, you don't have to do the P thing. Get your L's and do the hazard thingamajig at the same time. Then, wait 3 months (something to do with your visa something, you can ask at vicroads) and go sit for your driving. whatever you do, DON'T book for your test at carlton. stupid hook turns, stupid leafy suburbs. :P

hey, i know what you mean about not being able to convert our malaysian licenses! the 'undang' part was actually really easy... it was the hazard perception test that was pretty tricky. i'm sitting for my actual driving test in may.. i can't wait to get my license! :)

Just so you know.. I'm an expat and just started working in Malaysia. Your government also has ridiculous rules for the conversion of a foreign drivers licenses. I have been driving for the past 25 years and hold a valid drivers license from the USA. I recently applied for a conversion to a Malaysian drivers license and surprise surprise.. I'm only given a probational license, which means I have to drive with a giant P sticker on my car for the next two years. Ironaically, I have seen non-P Malaysian cars run red lights, drive 150km/hour at a 90 km/hour highway, drive on the wrong side of the road, and other stupid actions, but here I am with the giant red P sticker obeying all the rules. So don't feel bad.. foreigners are always treated with suspicion in another country. Yours included.
